The Dubai school jargon decoder
Admissions emails assume you already speak the language — KHDA, FS2, CAT4, TC, re-enrolment. Here’s all of it in plain words, so no school conversation catches you out.
KHDA
Knowledge and Human Development Authority — Dubai’s private-education regulator. Licenses schools, oversees fees, publishes inspection reports.
DSIB
Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau — the KHDA arm that inspects schools and awards the six-point ratings used across this guide.
The six-point scale
Outstanding · Very Good · Good · Acceptable · Weak · Very Weak — explained with counts on the homepage.
FS1 / FS2
Foundation Stage 1 and 2 — the first two years of British-curriculum school (ages 3–5), before Year 1. American equivalents: Pre-K / KG1.
EYFS
Early Years Foundation Stage — the UK framework covering FS1–FS2: learning through play, observed rather than tested.
KG1 / KG2
Kindergarten years in American-curriculum schools (ages 4–6) — see the full age chart.
Key Stage
UK grouping of year groups: KS1 (Years 1–2), KS2 (3–6), KS3 (7–9), KS4 (10–11, GCSEs), KS5 (sixth form).
GCSE / IGCSE
UK exams at 16 (Year 11); the ‘I’ is the international version most Dubai schools sit. Grades 9–1.
A-Levels
UK exams at 18 (Years 12–13) — typically three subjects, the standard route to UK universities.
BTEC
Career-focused UK qualification, often offered alongside A-Levels in Dubai sixth forms.
IB · PYP / MYP / DP
International Baccalaureate stages: Primary (3–12), Middle (11–16), Diploma (16–19). The DP is the exam that ends it.
CBSE / ICSE
India’s two main school boards. Dubai’s CBSE schools run April–March with board exams in Classes 10 and 12.
TC (Transfer Certificate)
The leaving document your current school issues — essential for Indian-curriculum admissions. Get it (and any attestation) before you leave the country: see the moving checklist.
CAT4
A reasoning assessment many British-curriculum schools use at entry and for tracking — not something to coach for.
GL / Progress tests
Standardised attainment tests used termly or yearly in many schools to track progress against international benchmarks.
EmSAT
UAE standardised test; requirements have varied by year and pathway — confirm current rules with the school for university-bound students.
NCfE
National Curriculum for England — what ‘British curriculum’ formally means on school licences and in this register.
Re-enrolment fee
A deposit many schools take each spring to hold next year’s place, deducted from fees. Ask when it’s due and whether it refunds.
Registration deposit
Paid on accepting an offer to secure the place, normally deducted from term one. Read refund terms before holding places at two schools.

Dubai lists move constantly as families relocate — a spring waitlist is often a summer place. See the timeline.
