What the inspectors said

Strengths the inspectors named:

  • Good in 2023-24, a third consecutive Good since its debut in 2022 - with Very Good ratings now achieved across multiple key performance standards.
  • Child protection and safeguarding rated Outstanding across the whole school.
  • Governance rated Very Good, and Foundation Stage teaching Very Good - high-quality early years practice named as a headline strength.
  • PIRLS reading results improved very well over five years, scoring 25 points above the target set after the previous assessment, with a strong reading culture and most students, including Emirati learners, making at least expected progress.
  • Council of International Schools accreditation gained in May 2024, and Year 9 TIMSS results published above the averages for Dubai, participating schools internationally and the UK.

What they asked the school to improve:

  • Teaching varies by phase: Very Good in Foundation Stage, Good across Primary and Secondary, and only Acceptable at Post-16 - an area the school has been directed to address, and the single most important question for a family joining the sixth form.
  • Leadership capacity is still evolving, particularly in the upper phases, with inspectors recommending leaders develop skills to address barriers linked to the school’s demographic intake.
  • Governors’ contributions to self-evaluation were described as narrow and in need of deepening.
  • The 2023-24 inspection was conducted under the previous principal, so current leadership has not yet been formally assessed.

Inclusion (students of determination): 92 students identified with SEN requirements at the last KHDA inspection, supported by a dedicated team of a Head of Inclusion, two Special Educational Needs Coordinators, four teachers and additional learning support assistants. The detail worth noting is architectural: the Inclusion Department is positioned at the heart of the school rather than tucked away, which the school describes as a physical representation of its inclusive philosophy - and ‘The Base’ operates at break and lunchtime as an inclusive gathering spot where students can socialise, which addresses the part of the school day that is hardest for many children with additional needs. All lessons are differentiated for the full range including more able, gifted and talented students, with English as an additional language provision alongside.
