Strengths the inspectors named:

  • Good in November 2023, confirming the 2022-23 breakthrough - the rating this school pursued through nine years at Acceptable from 2011 to 2020.
  • Rated Good with Outstanding features by British Schools Overseas in early 2023, where students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, their welfare, health and safety, and the leadership and management of the school were all judged Outstanding.
  • Attainment improved in Islamic Education, Arabic as an additional language and mathematics, with students attaining a good level in most core subjects and phases.
  • In benchmark assessments over two years, students improved by one level in English and science and two levels in mathematics - becoming good in English and science and very good in mathematics.
  • Highly affordable at roughly AED 20,400-38,400, in a school of around 4,130 students with 230-plus teachers and 35-plus teaching assistants.

What they asked the school to improve:

  • The school fell 15 points short of its PIRLS 2021 reading target with an average score of 561.
  • Emirati students sustained a weak judgement in English - a specific, published gap worth asking about directly.
  • Attainment is less high in Arabic than in the other core subjects.
  • Nine years at Acceptable before the current run: the improvement is real and recent, so ask what is sustaining it.

Inclusion (students of determination): Inspectors named the improved provision for all students of determination in helping them overcome barriers to learning, alongside the care provided for all students. The school’s published admissions position is unusually explicit and worth holding it to: students are not refused admission based only on their experience of a special educational need or disability, admission is not conditional on submitting a medical diagnosis, and sibling priority is given to students who experience SEND. Where it may rarely not be in a child’s best interests to be placed here, staff follow KHDA procedures and the decision is shared with the regulator. Note this is the Dubailand school, not The Winchester School in Jebel Ali - two different schools with similar names and different ratings.
